My personal goal was creating something where I'd have the ability to speak up for those that have no influence or affluence amidst the misunderstandings about race, class, and profitability that have led Fulton Street to be characterized as run-down, dangerous, or underutilized district in Brooklyn. Nurture BK is a conceptual transitional housing program that I designed to empower families to overcome everyday barriers to secure housing and confidence. “We live in buildings. With nothing else do we have such an intimate relationship.” -Edward Allen Article 25 in The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widow- hood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. Despite its historic link to Brooklyn's past and its financial success as a shopping district, Fulton Street is rarely celebrated in New York. The shopping Fulton street mall district attracts around 100,000 shoppers a day within this 17 block district are numerous retailers. However the community faces difficulty because of Brooklyn's emerging unknown citizen population without homes, welfare and simple lack of everyday opportunities. For many homeless families a sense of home no longer seems possible after living on the streets or in shelters. The isolation and danger they face on a daily basis often damages their ability of trust and depletes their capacity for hope. Nurture BK provides 12 months of rental assistance for struggling families. Participants are required to attend monthly educational workshops lead by our professional social service staff. Residents are also asked to participate in case specific management services. This project is a producing project. A work based on family that is work oriented and affordability, aimed at a mixed-income crowd. To ever produce NBK I would contact FULTON MALL IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION : The Fulton Mall Improvement Association (FMIA) is a business improvement district that serves over 150 businesses in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn. Incorporated in 1976, the FMIA is a not for profit corporation dedicated to improving the business environment and quality-of-life on the Fulton Street Mall, which stretches from Boerum Place to Flatbush Avenue. With this funding NBK would be part of an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable neighborhood where there is a more diverse group of inhabitants and a plethora of activities to bring A big element of the aging population is the loss of memory. This design is based on a system where the human’s process of memory is translated through circulation. The three stages of human creation of concepts/ memory is: ENCODING, STORAGE and RETRIEVAL Communal Gardens- residents will be able to grow their own fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers etc. This will provide residents a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Unisex Beauty& Body Salon- Residents can still keep & enhance their physical confidence through personal gatherings. Services are related to skin health, facial aesthetic, foot care, aromatherapy, -- even meditation, oxygen therapy, mud baths etc. Animal Assisted Therapy- Weekly Visits where residents can interact with animals which has been proven to benefit people in the reduction of anxiety and help with emotional growth. Water Aerobics- (aquatic exercise) Great way to add resistance without drawbacks of impact and raise steady healthy heartbeat. Avoids the impact during exercise is important with the elderly because too much force can hurt already fragile bones. Gallery- Considers Art and big events- Ballroom dancing, dinner under the stars, concerts etc Library- Regular books, books on cassettes for visually impaired residents, braille books for hearing impaired residents, Archives of old recorded music, radio talk show/programs, TV shows.
